Storage Units and Insurance

self storage Norwell MAGenerally speaking, when it comes to storage facilities, they’re not responsible for the contents of your unit. That rests entirely on you. And while the facility you use might be state of the art and you might engage in every best practice you can think of, things can still happen. And when they do, you want to make sure you’re covered.

Storage insurances is somewhat similar to apartment insurance. It’s something that you don’t need to have, but if you don’t, you could end up losing in the long run. The landlord is covered for certain events, which provides a limited amount of coverage for tenants and generally doesn’t cover belongings in the apartment.

Some storage unit facilities offer you insurance on your unit as soon as you rent one. But don’t misunderstand — the facility isn’t insuring the contents of your unit, they’re acting as a middle man between you and their preferred insurance company. While this is certainly convenient — storage unit and insurance in the same place at the same time — you may be better off seeking out your own insurance. Different companies offer different premiums and levels of insurance, and you may even be able to add it to an existing policy, such as your homeowners policy.

However you end up choosing your insurance, make sure you get it and that it’s both current and sufficient to cover whatever it is you’re storing. If the unexpected should happen, it’s good to know that you’ll be protected.

Choosing the Right Size Storage Unit at Walk In Closet Self Storage in Randolph

self storage norwell interiorYou don’t want to pay for space you don’t need, and we don’t want you to either! That’s why we offer storage closets in many different sizes so you can choose the one that best fits your needs. Refer to this guide to determine how much you can fit in each size unit. And if you need help choosing the right one, contact our storage experts who are always happy to help.

5’ x 5’

Think of this like a small storage closet. It’s idea for files, holiday decorations, out-of-season clothing, or small pieces of furniture.

5’ x 10’

A unit of this size is comparable to a walk-in closet. This is perfect for storing one or two rooms of furniture, like a sofa, a chair, a dresser, and a mattress set. This unit will hold everything you can fit into a pick-up truck.

10’ x 10’

This unit is about the same size as a small bedroom. If you pack it efficiently, it can hold all of the items in a one-bedroom apartment. If you can fit it in a 14-foot moving truck, you can fit it in this unit.

10’ x 15′

This unit should hold the contents of a two-bedroom apartment, minus appliances, or equipment and files from a small office space. This equates to a 20-foot moving truck.

10’ x 20’

This unit is the size of a one-car garage. You could use it to hold the furniture from a two or three bedroom apartment, including appliances and boxes. It also could hold equipment, files, and inventory from an office space. If you can fit it in a 24- to 26-foot moving truck, it will fit in this unit.

10’ x 30’

This unit is the size of a large garage and is the largest unit we offer. It will hold seven rooms of furniture, or all the items that will fit in a 26-foot moving truck or larger.

Of course, these estimates can be affected by how efficiently you pack your belongings. We’ll provide tips in a later post!

Protecting Items in Your Storage Unit from Theft

self storage norwell maThere are all sorts of storage units out there. Some of them have been around for a while and are little more than a metal box subject to the ravages of time, nature, and the elements. Some are brand-new and top of the line, with climate control, 24-hour security, and keycard access. And some are in between, with some of the bells and whistle but not all.

Irrespective of what kind of storage unit you have, one major concern is theft. If someone knows or suspects that you have something of value in your unit, they might find a way in.

While Walk in Closet is a safe, state-of-the-art storage facility, with video surveillance to help provide the highest level of security, here are a few safety tips to help keep your valuables safe no matter where you choose to store your belongings.

Intentional mislabeling. If you mark your cardboard boxes according to content or by household location, consider putting your most valuable items in a box and deciding on an innocuous label — “kitchen” or “bathroom,” for example. Tell everyone who needs to know where the valuables are what the box says, and keep the information safe.

Boxes in boxes. If someone breaks into your unit, they’re going to try and get in and out as quickly as possible, so make it as challenging as possible to get to your valuables. Put them in boxes that are inside boxes that are inside boxes and place them at the back of the unit so it’s a real job to get to them. Thieves won’t spend the time digging, especially when the items are that well-hidden.

Check in. If thieves are hanging around watching for activity in a unit, then give them some. Stop by periodically and make it clear that the items weren’t placed in the storage unit and left there — someone is checking in on the unit. Thieves will be more likely to hit a unit that’s less likely to have an owner show up.

Invest in a good lock. A flimsy lock on your unit is a huge red flag for thieves who know they can break it easily. Spend the extra money and get a solid metal lock that’s going to make anyone thinking about breaking in think twice.

Another great way to prevent theft when storing your things is to make sure that you choose the right storage facility. Call 781-885-3965 or contact us via email to learn more about how Walk In Closet can help keep your possessions and valuables safe.
