The Sad Tale of Valuable Cars in Abandoned Storage Units

img_storagetreasure61There’s something compelling about spending a small chunk of money on something unknown. You may end up with a box full of junk, but maybe — just maybe — you’ll end up with a treasure on your hands that you purchased for a song. This concept is used at county fairs, game shows, and storage unit auctions.

Sometimes people will purchase the contents of abandoned storage units, gambling on finding something valuable inside. And sometimes those bets pay off. For example, plenty of collectible cars have been found in old storage units. Read on for a few stories:

The Spy Who Loved Me

A man once purchased the contents of an abandoned storage unit for $100. Under a blanket in the back of the unit was a Lotus Esprit S1 that was in good shape. Except that it had fins instead of wheels. Turns out, this was the submarine car from The Spy Who Loved Me. It was eventually auctioned off for enough to let the new owner retire.

Cadillac Coupe

In Austin, Texas, someone opened an abandoned storage unit he purchased and found 500 car parts, many of which were deemed to be scrap metal. When they were assembled, however, they made a complete 1959 2-door Cadillac Coupe. Half of the parts were already restored, so the previous owner must have forgotten about his or her little restoration project.

Winning the Race

A storage unit purchased by a man in Florida contained a beautiful vintage race car that was sold to a collector for more than $18,000. Quite a find!

So what’s the moral of the story to current storage unit owners? Make sure your next of kin knows about your storage unit in case the unthinkable happens. You wouldn’t want that sports car submarine you’ve been saving for your grandchild to end up on eBay!

Self Storage: As American as Apple Pie

Self Storage as American as Apple PieWhat’s more American than a cheeseburger and fries? What’s more addictive than a daily trip to Starbucks? Keeping stuff in self storage, apparently. In the US, there are more self storage facilities than McDonald’s and Starbucks combined, according to an REJournals report. In fact, there are 21 feet of self storage for every American household, despite the fact that 65% of self-storage customers have garages.

So what does this mean? Are we a nation of hoarders? Or is everyone embracing minimalism in their homes without shedding their stuff? The average size of the American family has gone down while house sizes have gone up, so we should have plenty of room for all our stuff. So what gives?

A lot of trends have contributed to the explosion of self storage. We are a mobile nation, and people sometimes need a place to stash their stuff during a big move. We’ve also seen the disappearance of the attic as builders use trusses instead of rafters in homes, which are cheaper to build, but don’t leave any space. Not surprisingly, the largest rates of self storage use are in states with a lot of new homes and a large population growth, like Florida and Texas, where basements don’t exist. People who live in the Northeast, where homes are older and typically have attics and basements, don’t use as much self storage.

Self storage is a fairly young industry and it’s come a long way since its 1960s start in Texas as a series of tin-sided garages. Now self storage facilities are temperature controlled, security conscious, and can accommodate everything from outgrown baby clothes and holiday decorations to precious wines and boats.

So if you’re in the market for a self storage unit, you’re in good company!
