The Importance of Self Storage Unit Climate Control

thermometer-428339_1280There’s an old saying in New England that everyone has heard at least once in their life: “If you don’t like the weather here, wait 10 minutes.”

New England does have its share of wild temperature swings and even crazier weather when each season reaches its apex, but so do a lot of other regions in the country. That’s why no matter where you live, if you have a storage unit and you’re concerned about keeping everything in it in good shape, you’ll want to choose a storage facility with climate control.

Climate Controlled storage uses heating units and air conditioning to keep a more consistent climate in the building. Some facilities even go the extra step and have units installed to prevent excess humidity, which can be even more damaging than heat or cold.

The frequent changes in temperature and humidity are the main causes of damage to wooden furniture, fabrics, cardboard, and other items. It’s not unusual to find that wood stored in a non-climate-controlled unit has warped, or that fabric has mildewed.

Even if a climate-controlled unit is a little more expensive, when you consider the damage that the elements can do to your stored items, it’s a worthwhile investment.

Storing Large Appliances in Your Self Storage Unit

Applicances-1It’s tough to store appliances at home. They can’t be tucked away in the corner of a closet and most people want to use their garages for cars, not for that washing machine that they’re saving for their kid’s first apartment or the fridge that will go in the home theater — once the home theater is built. A self storage unit seems the obvious answer. But special care must be taken when moving and storing large appliances.

Before storing your appliance, it’s important to thoroughly clean it. Refrigerators should be clean to prevent the growth of mold on that sticky juice spill. Lint filters, grids, and tubes on dryers should be cleaned. You should also take care to empty the appliance of water. This will prevent freeze damage in cold temperatures and mold growth in warm ones. In dishwashers, refrigerators and washing machines, all hoses should be drained. Freezers should be defrosted and the defrost pan should be cleaned and emptied. Once your appliance is clean and dry, it’s ready for transport!

During transport, keep your appliance upright. This is especially important for refrigerators because if they’re put on their side, refrigeration units can be damaged. Use strong tape to hold doors closed so they don’t suddenly spring open during the move, which can damage the door or adjacent items.

Once your appliance is at the storage unit, remove the tape and leave doors slightly ajar so that air can circulate. Cover the items with a cotton sheet or canvas tarp to protect them from dust while allowing air exposure. If you live in a climate with extreme temperatures, a temperature-controlled unit will prevent mechanical damage due to freezing temperatures or rust; however, if you choose not to use one, be sure to allow your appliance 24 to 48 hours to warm up before use if it’s been exposed to freezing temperatures.

5’ x 5’

Think of this like a small storage closet. It’s idea for files, holiday decorations, out-of-season clothing, or small pieces of furniture.

5’ x 10’

A unit of this size is comparable to a walk-in closet. This is perfect for storing one or two rooms of furniture, like a sofa, a chair, a dresser, and a mattress set. This unit will hold everything you can fit into a pick-up truck.

10’ x 10’

This unit is about the same size as a small bedroom. If you pack it efficiently, it can hold all of the items in a one-bedroom apartment. If you can fit it in a 14-foot moving truck, you can fit it in this unit.

10’ x 15′

This unit should hold the contents of a two-bedroom apartment, minus appliances, or equipment and files from a small office space. This equates to a 20-foot moving truck.

10’ x 20’

This unit is the size of a one-car garage. You could use it to hold the furniture from a two or three bedroom apartment, including appliances and boxes. It also could hold equipment, files, and inventory from an office space. If you can fit it in a 24- to 26-foot moving truck, it will fit in this unit.

10’ x 30’

This unit is the size of a large garage and is the largest unit we offer. It will hold seven rooms of furniture, or all the items that will fit in a 26-foot moving truck or larger.

Of course, these estimates can be affected by how efficiently you pack your belongings. We’ll provide tips in a later post!

Is Climate-Controlled Self Storage Necessary?

ClimateControlledStorageWhether you’re using a storage unit to hold your furniture and clothing temporarily during a move or to indefinitely keep papers, seasonal decorations, or other things you can’t bear to part with, the things in your storage unit are important and should be protected. When choosing a storage unit, many people don’t consider the way the climate can wreak havoc on their things.

In New England, we are lucky enough to enjoy the changing of the seasons. But with the softly falling snow can come brutally cold temperatures and with the beautiful summer beach days can come high humidity levels. Cold temperatures can make the items in your storage unit brittle and prone to breakage while high humidity levels can quickly damage papers, photos, and electronics. If you are storing things in a storage unit for more than a week, climate control is important.

A climate-controlled storage unit will maintain a constant temperature and humidity level, which will protect your belongings. Further, climate-controlled units have to be part of a larger building, which also protects stored items from water damage and insect infestation.

Not everyone needs climate control, but if you’re planning on storing delicate items for a long period of time, it’s the best way to protect your important belongings.
