It’s tough to store appliances at home. They can’t be tucked away in the corner of a closet and most people want to use their garages for cars, not for that washing machine that they’re saving for their kid’s first apartment or the fridge that will go in the home theater — once the home theater is built. A self storage unit seems the obvious answer. But special care must be taken when moving and storing large appliances.
Before storing your appliance, it’s important to thoroughly clean it. Refrigerators should be clean to prevent the growth of mold on that sticky juice spill. Lint filters, grids, and tubes on dryers should be cleaned. You should also take care to empty the appliance of water. This will prevent freeze damage in cold temperatures and mold growth in warm ones. In dishwashers, refrigerators and washing machines, all hoses should be drained. Freezers should be defrosted and the defrost pan should be cleaned and emptied. Once your appliance is clean and dry, it’s ready for transport!
During transport, keep your appliance upright. This is especially important for refrigerators because if they’re put on their side, refrigeration units can be damaged. Use strong tape to hold doors closed so they don’t suddenly spring open during the move, which can damage the door or adjacent items.
Once your appliance is at the storage unit, remove the tape and leave doors slightly ajar so that air can circulate. Cover the items with a cotton sheet or canvas tarp to protect them from dust while allowing air exposure. If you live in a climate with extreme temperatures, a temperature-controlled unit will prevent mechanical damage due to freezing temperatures or rust; however, if you choose not to use one, be sure to allow your appliance 24 to 48 hours to warm up before use if it’s been exposed to freezing temperatures.
