Avoiding Common Moving Company Scams

Avoiding Common Moving Company ScamsMoving is almost always a stressful time. And while it may seem daunting, it’s always a good idea to do your research when you’re looking into using a moving company. While of course price is an important consideration, you want to make sure that you can trust the company you choose. After all, you’re entrusting them to pack and move all of you and your family’s personal belongings – in a sense your entire life! That being said, there are a lot of scams out there that involve moving companies.

SpareFoot recently posted a great piece on How to Avoid the 7 Most Common Moving Scams. It has some really helpful information to help you avoid getting scammed during what is an already stressful time.

1. Low Estimate, Inflated Price — The most common scam is the bait-and-switch tactic, said Jeff Walker, president of MovingScam.com, a website that provides moving tips and resources for consumers.

2. Lost Items — During a move, valuables like jewelry and antiques might “disappear.” Items also could get damaged.

3. Extra Charges — Even if a rogue company honors the amount originally quoted for transferring your goods, it may look for other ways to inflate the final price such as “moving supplies.”

4. Over-the-Phone Estimates — Not all quotes over the phone are legitimate, and crooks are unlikely to send an estimator to your home in advance.

5. Eyebrow-Raising Hourly Estimates — Two companies might look at your belongings and estimate the move will take eight hours. Another might say it will take four hours. 6. No Brick and Mortar Location

7. Large Deposit — A large deposit upfront is a red flag.
