Making Peace with Things and Storage Units

flea-market-1132551_960_720Earlier this month, The Atlantic published a beautiful essay titled Finding Solace in a Storage Unit. It explores what these storage units mean to people and why the US has so many more of them than other countries.

It could be that we’re transient or materialistic, but the author suggests storage units mean more than that. They serve as a way to start a business or as a place for a family to get back on their feet (not something we recommend!). They allow us to hang onto our things, whether we need them or not, and the author says that optimism might be the reason we cling to our things. Maybe something is more valuable than originally recognized and will propel the owner into serious wealth. Maybe things will get better and the storage unit renter will marry again, buy another house, or start another business and have reason to use all that stuff again.

The drivers of the storage unit are downsizing, dislocation, death, and divorce, and it was this last reason why the essay’s author chose to rent a storage unit for a year. As the essay ends, she says that being separated from her stuff for a year gave her a different perspective on it and she was able to look at it with clear eyes, choosing what she wanted to keep without the memory of her husband or her marriage looming over it. As she said, her experience with a storage unit allows her to “make peace with her things.”

Alternative Uses for Your Self Storage Unit

wine-426463_960_720We all know that storage units provide the perfect place to stash your motorcycle in the winter or your Christmas decorations in the summer, but if you think outside the box — following the rules of the storage unit facility, of course — your storage space can become almost an extension of your home, especially when it’s a climate controlled storage unit like we have available at Walk In Closets Self Storage.

Home Office

If you’re starting a sales business that requires you to keep inventory on hand, but you don’t want it in your living room, a storage unit could be your best bet! Keep all of those boxes stored out of your home in a facility that’s convenient and you’ll have easy access to your inventory anytime you want it. Put an inexpensive desk in there among the boxes and you’ll have a quiet place to work away from all the distractions of home.

An Extension of Your Artistic Space

Looking for a place where you can store your hobbies, craft, or art supplies? If you’re not making as many quilts these days as you used to, or your sculptures are too large to keep at home, a self storage unit is perfect for keeping your hobbies and artistic creations organized.

Your Dream Closet

If you’ve always dreamed of having one of those expansive and well-organized closets you see on TV all the time, a storage unit could get you close to your dream. Fill the unit with shelves and shoe racks, and your storage unit will become the perfect place to keep your off-season close, your huge shoe collection, or all of those leather bags you just can’t part with.

A Wine Cellar (of sorts)

While a wine cellar would be ideal, for many of us they’re not feasible to keep. A climate controlled self storage unit is perfect to store wine. They offer the ideal darkness, temperature, and humidity levels.

A storage unit can be much more than a place to stash your waterskis, even though that’s a good idea too. Get creative!

Resolve to Get Organized!

new-years-eve-1004535_960_720Happy New Year! If you made resolutions for the new year, believe it or not, a storage unit can help you fulfill many of them. Planning to exercise more? Travel? Get organized? Start a new hobby? A storage unit can help. You look skeptical. Let us prove it to you.

What’s the worst part of an exercise routine? Leaving the house! Think about how easy working out would be if you had your own home gym. If only you had the space. Why not transform that rarely used guest room into your own home gym? Stash your guest room furniture in a storage unit, which would cost a lot less than a gym membership, and exercise your way to rock hard abs.

Want to travel the world, but can’t figure out how to maintain a home in the States? You don’t have to! Let your lease run out, store your belongings in a storage unit, and go experience the world. After all, you only live once!

Want to get more organized? Clear out those cupboards without throwing everything away! If you only use your good china once a year, put it in a storage unit and clear cabinet space for that ancient, but well-loved, food processor cluttering up your counter.

Maybe this is the year you’re going to start sewing. Or painting. Or sculpting! But where are you going to keep those extra slabs of marble waiting to be carved? Certainly not your dining room. Store them! A storage unit allows you to easily pick up a new hobby without cluttering up your living space.

Let this be your year! And let us help.

Surprising Find in a Storage Unit; The New Film: Finders Keepers

finders-keepers-posterNot sure what to watch this weekend? Well, have we got a suggestion for you. A story that’s been the stuff of legend in the self storage community has been turned into a documentary, titled Finders Keepers, and it looks worth a watch.

Here’s the story: A man went to an auction at a self storage facility and bid on and won a smoker. He proudly took it home, thinking of all the backyard barbecues in his future, popped it open, and discovered a leg inside. He called 911, his story hit the news and the original owner of the storage unit contents — and the leg — came forward. He claimed that after his leg was amputated, he put it in a safe spot so he could keep it always. And we all know what happens when you put something in a safe spot. You often misplace it!

So the leg’s original owner requested its return. The leg’s new owner saw this as a business opportunity and turned his backyard into a sideshow — charging people to look at the leg in the smoker. So who’s the rightful owner? The man born with it or the man who paid for it? You’ll get no spoilers from us! Don’t forget the popcorn.

Storing Your Summer Gear for Winter

StoringGearWinterSummer certainly held on this year. In New England, jackets haven’t made much of an appearance, but the temperature is definitely trending down. So c’mon — we know it’s tough, but it’s time to loosen your grip on summer. You could stuff all your summer gear in the basement or garage, but why deal with all that clutter and potential damage to your prized summer items? Instead, store them properly in your storage unit so it’ll be ready when warm weather comes again.

Summer Clothing

Make room in your closet by putting shorts and sundresses in storage. Make sure to wash and dry them thoroughly, paying careful attention to stain removal. Toss a few silica packets into plastic storage bins and pack up your clothes. The silica packets will prevent dampness from ruining your clothes. Of course, so will a temperature controlled storage unit!

Summer Gear

Wakeboards, surfboards and water skis all should be cleaned thoroughly and dried before making the move to storage. Then you can put them in a clearly labeled and sealed box, or lean them against the wall or in a specially designed shelf in your storage unit.

Pool Supplies

If you’re one of the lucky ones with a backyard swimming pool, it’s probably very hard to kiss summer goodbye by covering it up for the winter. But winter’s coming whether you want it to or not! Clean and dry pool toys and store them in a box. Electrical supplies, like the pool vac or pumps, should be drained of water and allowed to dry. Pack them away in a box with a few silica packs, which will eliminate any dampness that will inevitably remain.

Now that your summer chores are over, put on a pair of cozy slippers, wrap your hands around a mug of tea, and watch the leaves fall. That’s not so bad, is it?

How to Store Garden Tools

tools-103444_640We don’t mean to rush you. You’re still harvesting tomatoes, your fall kale crop is just starting to sprout, and the mums are ready to be planted. But looking ahead to preparing your garden tools for winter storage isn’t a bad thing. If you start now, you’ll have a much smaller job to do when it’s time to lock everything away in your storage unit.

Sharpen Blades

As you use your digging and cutting tools, look for a sharp edge. If they’ve become dull, which they likely have after an entire spring and summer of use, file the edges sharp again or take them to a professional to do so for you. Before storing these metal blades for the winter, use a stiff brush to loosen dirt and rust, and rub the metal with a light oil. And as long as you’re checking the blades, take a look at the handles. If they aren’t smooth enough for you to run your hand along them without getting splinters, rub them down with some fine-grit sandpaper.

Clean Your Mower

Never store a dirty mower. Make sure your mower is free from dirt and grass clippings. Empty it of fuel by running till it stops. Change its oil, sharpen or replace the blade, and put it in storage where it will be all ready for the first mow of spring. Give your trimmer similar treatment. Don’t put it in storage if it’s full of fuel and dirty.

Container Gardens

If you have potted plants in your yard that will die over the winter, it’s a good idea to empty them of soil and leave them outside, or bring containers full of soil into your storage unit to refresh and reuse in the spring. If you leave pots filled with soil outside all winter, the soil will expand and contract as temperatures change. This could result in cracked pots.

If you prepare all of your gardening equipment well for off-season storage in your unit, you’ll be ready to plant again when the gardening bug bites in the spring.

The Importance of Self Storage Unit Climate Control

thermometer-428339_1280There’s an old saying in New England that everyone has heard at least once in their life: “If you don’t like the weather here, wait 10 minutes.”

New England does have its share of wild temperature swings and even crazier weather when each season reaches its apex, but so do a lot of other regions in the country. That’s why no matter where you live, if you have a storage unit and you’re concerned about keeping everything in it in good shape, you’ll want to choose a storage facility with climate control.

Climate Controlled storage uses heating units and air conditioning to keep a more consistent climate in the building. Some facilities even go the extra step and have units installed to prevent excess humidity, which can be even more damaging than heat or cold.

The frequent changes in temperature and humidity are the main causes of damage to wooden furniture, fabrics, cardboard, and other items. It’s not unusual to find that wood stored in a non-climate-controlled unit has warped, or that fabric has mildewed.

Even if a climate-controlled unit is a little more expensive, when you consider the damage that the elements can do to your stored items, it’s a worthwhile investment.

Crazy Finds in Storage Units

tumblr_nlfnlusCb81sfie3io1_1280It stands to reason that there are certain items that you simply can’t store in a storage unit. Most of them are common sense, and they’re restricted for the safety of not only the storage facility itself, but everyone who uses it as well.

Of course, telling people they can’t store certain items is one thing. Making sure that they don’t is another matter altogether. Here are some of the more out-there finds in storage units.

Grandma.

A Florida family kept their grandmother’s body in a blue casket inside a storage unit for 17 years following her death. When the storage unit owner notified the family that the unit would be sold, they responded that the contents couldn’t be put up for auction, since they included a relative’s dead body.

Unreleased Michael Jackson songs.

More than 250 original songs by Michael Jackson were once found in a storage unit belonging to his father, Joe Jackson. No recording companies had a legal claim to the songs, reportedly worth millions of dollars – making the lucky buyer a Smooth Criminal.

Burt Reynolds’ odd collection.

Some of the many oddities found in Burt Reynolds’ storage unit include a framed letter from his doctor about a 1955 surgery on his spleen, a horse carriage built by Dolly Parton, the bill of sale for Roy Rogers’ horse Trigger, and the canoe from the 1972 movie Deliverance.

Old space equipment.

A storage unit close to Florida’s Cape Canaveral contained a NASA rocket and countdown clock. The old equipment had been stored there after the space program they were part of was discontinued.

Nic Cage’s million-dollar comic book.

Back in 2000, actor Nic Cage filed a police report after an extremely rare comic book was stolen from his home in Los Angeles. More than a decade later, the comic book (Action Comics #1 – worth more than a million dollars) turned up in an abandoned storage unit.

Cold, hard cash.

A man in San Jose got a storage unit at auction, later realizing that it contained gold and silver ingots worth more than half a million dollars, all stored in a blue Rubbermaid container.

Using a Storage Unit When Buying or Selling a Home

ForSaleThere’s no doubt the housing market is gaining strength, and it’s interesting the role that storage units play in those transactions. From house staging to quick moves, people buying and selling homes often use storage units to help them out.

Someone looking to sell a home is often advised to stage it. The goal of home staging is to remove personal effects and clutter to make the home appear bigger and allow potential owners to envision themselves in it. Sellers often will rent a storage unit to store family photos, large libraries or bulky pieces of furniture that can make a home appear cramped before putting the house on the market.

If the staging does its job, that house will sell quickly. Amazingly, in very hot markets, homes have been known to sell in just hours! In these cases, sellers might not be ready to move in the 30 to 45 days most contracts allow. Maybe they’re building a home that isn’t ready yet. Or maybe the right job in that dream city hasn’t yet come along. In these cases, temporary housing is necessary. And temporary housing often doesn’t have the room for a houseful of belongings. Once again, storage units to the rescue! As this trend continues, the summer months are not only the busiest times for real estate agents and moving companies, but for storage unit companies, too.

Storage units are a great option for people who need to reduce clutter in the long-term, but they also are fantastic quick-fix solutions for people on the move.
